N4-acetylcytidine (ac4C) is a modified nucleoside found in tRNAs and rRNAs of a wide range of organisms including bacteria, yeast, and humans. Structurally, ac4C is cytidine with an acetyl group at the 4th nitrogen position of its cytosine base. The addition of this acetyl group is facilitated by NAT10, a N-acetyltransferase enzyme in humans.
N4-acetylcytidine plays crucial roles in regulating cellular processes such as protein synthesis, maintenance of chromosomal stability. The study of N4-acetylcytidine is of profound significance due to its potential to serve as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for a variety of diseases, including cancer. Alterations in its levels have been correlated with disease states, thus, its accurate detection and quantification can provide valuable insights into disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies.
