3-Methyluridine is a modified nucleoside that is found in the ribosomal RNA of several species, including bacteria, yeast, and mammals. It is a methylated form of uridine, where a methyl group is attached to the uracil base at the 3-position. This modification, which is believed to enhance the stability of the rRNA and improve the efficiency of protein synthesis, is catalyzed by specific enzymes known as methyltransferases. Given its potential roles in RNA stability and protein translation, 3-methyluridine has emerged as a subject of interest in biomedical research. Furthermore, changes in the levels of 3-methyluridine have also been linked to several diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders, making it a potentially valuable diagnostic marker or therapeutic target.
