Bradykinin is a short peptide composed of nine amino acid residues, with the sequence Arg-Pro-Pro-Gly-Phe-Ser-Pro-Phe-Arg. It is generated from kininogen through the action of kallikrein. The kinin system consists of high-molecular-weight kininogen (HMWK) and low-molecular-weight kininogen (LMWK), with bradykinin primarily produced from HMWK. Bradykinin exhibits various biological activities and plays a crucial role in multiple physiological and pathological processes, particularly in vasodilation, blood pressure regulation, inflammatory responses, and pain perception. In chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, elevated levels of bradykinin can serve as an indicator of disease activity. The role of bradykinin in pain perception has been extensively studied. By analyzing bradykinin and its metabolites, one can gain a deeper understanding of the biological mechanisms of pain and provide new therapeutic strategies for pain management.
