Cis-10-nonadecenoic acid is a long-chain monounsaturated fatty acid with the chemical formula C19H36O2, consisting of 19 carbon atoms and a cis double bond located at the 10th position (cis-10). Its structural formula can be represented as CH₃(CH₂)₇CH=CH(CH₂)₉COOH, where the cis configuration of the double bond introduces a bend in the molecule. Compared to trans fatty acids of similar structure, this configuration imparts unique physical and biological properties.
During metabolism, cis-10-nonadecenoic acid can undergo β-oxidation, breaking down into shorter-chain fatty acids that eventually enter the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle to produce energy. Like other long-chain fatty acids, it likely relies on the carnitine transport system to enter the mitochondria, where it is metabolized. Cis-monounsaturated fatty acids are believed to help lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels and raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, thereby contributing to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The cis configuration of the double bond may also confer certain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to cis-10-nonadecenoic acid, similar to other cis unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid and linoleic acid.
