Phe-Asn is a dipeptide composed of phenylalanine (Phe) and asparagine (Asn). It typically does not have a distinct independent function within the biological system, but it may appear as an intermediate in the process of protein degradation. Phenylalanine and asparagine themselves play important roles in many biological processes, such as protein synthesis, enzymatic reactions, and cell signal transduction. Since Phe-Asn can be generated during protein degradation, its quantitative analysis can be used to study the degradation pathways and metabolic rates of specific proteins within cells or in vivo. This is crucial for understanding the dynamic changes of proteins, the turnover rates of proteins in cells, and the maintenance of protein homeostasis. Cancer cells often exhibit abnormal protein metabolic activity, and analyzing the changes in metabolites such as Phe-Asn can reveal characteristic alterations in cancer cell metabolism, providing potential biomarkers for cancer diagnosis.
