Purine is a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound that serves as the core structural unit of purine bases, which are essential components of DNA and RNA. Its structure comprises a six-membered pyrimidine ring fused to a five-membered imidazole ring. Purine metabolism is critical for cellular proliferation, nucleic acid synthesis, and energy transfer processes. In tumor cells, purine metabolism is typically highly active, as cancer cells require a large supply of nucleotides to support rapid DNA replication and cell division. Changes in purine metabolism and fluctuations in the levels of its metabolites may be associated with the onset, progression, and malignant transformation of cancer. Therefore, monitoring the levels of purine and its metabolites can serve as biomarkers for tumor activity and therapeutic response.
Additionally, purine metabolites, such as uric acid, may accumulate under certain pathological conditions (e.g., gout or renal dysfunction). Monitoring these metabolites provides valuable insights into disease severity and a patient's metabolic health. Given that purines are central to numerous biological processes, their metabolic study is crucial for understanding cellular functions, nucleic acid metabolism, and the mechanisms underlying related diseases.
