Saponins are a class of bio-organic compounds that are particularly abundant in the plant kingdom. They are characterized by their soap-like foaming properties, producing foam when shaken in aqueous solution. More specifically, they are naturally occurring glycosides, when hydrolyzed, produce glycosides (sugars) and aglycones (sapogenins). Research has shown that saponins possess various biological activities and medicinal properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, insecticidal, anticancer, cytotoxic, and molluscicidal effects. Additionally, saponins have been reported to exhibit cholesterol-lowering effects in animals and humans. Novel synthetic steroidal saponins have been shown to selectively induce apoptosis or necrosis in cancer cells. Saponins are considered the starting precursors for the semi-synthesis of steroidal drugs in the pharmaceutical industry. Furthermore, studies have highlighted the clinical significance of triterpenoid saponins in the prevention and treatment of metabolic and vascular diseases. Due to the complex chemical structure of saponins and the presence of other impurities, understanding the relationship between the chemical properties of saponins and their medicinal effects is not easy. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of saponin compounds can aid in their better clinical application, expand their usage, and reduce the toxic side effects of saponins.
