Thymidine is a naturally occurring nucleoside composed of the pyrimidine base thymine attached to a deoxyribose sugar molecule. Thymidine is an essential building block of DNA, and it plays a critical role in DNA replication and repair processes. As a key component of the DNA structure, thymidine is incorporated into the DNA strand during cell division, particularly in rapidly proliferating cells.
In tumor cells, the metabolism of thymidine may change, and alterations in its levels and metabolic pathways can be associated with the occurrence, progression, and malignant transformation of cancer. In certain types of cancers, fluctuations in thymidine levels and its metabolites may serve as biomarkers for tumor activity and therapeutic response. Therefore, measuring the levels of thymidine and its metabolites can be used to assess tumor proliferation rates and monitor treatment effectiveness. Additionally, since thymidine can be released from damaged cells or tissues, elevated levels may indicate cell damage, infection, or inflammation. Monitoring its metabolites can help evaluate the extent of tissue damage, the severity of infection, and the intensity of the inflammatory response.
