17α-Estradiol is a naturally occurring stereoisomer of estradiol, a potent estrogen steroid hormone that plays a role in regulating the reproductive system and the development of secondary sexual characteristics. Unlike 17β-estradiol, which is the most active form of estrogen in humans, 17α-estradiol has weaker estrogenic activity and is characterized by a hydroxyl group in the α-configuration at the C17 position.
Although 17α-estradiol has weaker estrogenic activity, studies suggest that it may have neuroprotective effects, potentially helping to slow the progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Quantitative analysis of 17α-estradiol and its metabolites can provide deeper insights into its distribution, metabolic pathways, and pharmacokinetic properties in the body, serving as foundational data for the development of new therapeutic drugs. The quantitative analysis of 17α-estradiol and its metabolites is of great importance in the diagnosis and monitoring of endocrine-related diseases. For example, changes in 17α-estradiol levels can serve as an auxiliary diagnostic marker in conditions such as hypogonadism or other endocrine disorders. Additionally, tracking the concentration changes of its metabolites can be used to assess disease progression or the effectiveness of treatment.
