Azelaic acid (AzA) is a natural saturated dicarboxylic acid widely found in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. It exhibits multiple biological activities, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects, making it popular in medicine and cosmetics. AzA is highly effective in treating acne and rosacea by inhibiting the growth of Propionibacterium acnes and reducing skin inflammation. Additionally, AzA can reduce skin pigmentation by inhibiting tyrosinase activity, improving skin texture, and evening skin tone.
In the medical field, AzA is not only used for dermatological treatments but also researched for potential therapies in diseases such as melanoma and certain types of cancer. Its antioxidant properties help neutralize free radicals and protect cells from oxidative damage. In plants, AzA plays a significant role in stress resistance and growth regulation, enhancing plant defenses against pathogens and environmental stress.
Therefore, accurate quantitative and qualitative analysis of AzA is essential for clinical research, drug development, and plant science studies.
