β-Muricholic acid (β-MCA) and α-muricholic acid (α-MCA) are two bile acids primarily found in the bile of rodents. They differ structurally in that β-MCA has a β-hydroxyl group at the 3-position on the A-ring, while α-MCA features an α-hydroxyl group at the same position. This structural distinction results in differences in their biological activities and metabolic pathways. β-MCA plays a unique role in regulating gut microbiota and lipid metabolism and is increasingly recognized for its potential in reducing lipid accumulation and improving metabolic health. In comparison, α-MCA also contributes to lipid metabolism, but its functions and metabolic characteristics are distinct from those of β-MCA.
