    Fumaric Acid Analysis Service

      Fumaric acid is a widely occurring organic acid in nature, especially in plants and fungi. It has a fruity taste and is commonly used as a food additive. Fumaric acid is the trans-isomer of butenedioic acid, while maleic acid is the cis-isomer. As a key intermediate in the tricarboxylic acid cycle (citric acid cycle), fumaric acid plays a crucial role in energy metabolism. It is produced from succinate via succinate dehydrogenase in the electron transport chain and is further converted to malate by fumarase. In addition to its role in energy metabolism, fumaric acid is also a product in the urea cycle.

       

      Fumaric acid has significant importance in both biological systems and industrial applications. Since 1946, it has been used as a food acidulant and is approved as a food additive in the EU, USA, Australia, and New Zealand, designated as E297. It is commonly used in making wheat tortillas, food preservatives, and fermentation acids, especially in beverages and baking powders. Furthermore, fumaric acid has extensive applications in the pharmaceutical field. In the 1950s, it was developed in Germany as a treatment for psoriasis and marketed by Biogen Idec in Europe under the name Fumaderm. Dimethyl fumarate has been further developed as a treatment for multiple sclerosis. Additionally, fumaric acid is used in the production of polyester resins and polyols and as a mordant for dyes.
