γ-Glu-Met is a dipeptide composed of two amino acids: glutamic acid (Glu) and methionine (Met). In this dipeptide, a gamma-glutamyl bond connects the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamic acid to the amino group of methionine. This unique gamma-glutamyl linkage distinguishes it from the more common alpha-peptide bonds found in most peptides, and it plays a crucial role in various biological functions.
The content of γ-Glu-Met can serve as a potential biomarker for certain physiological and pathological states. In clinical and biochemical research, measuring the levels of γ-Glu-Met can help assess oxidative stress status, liver function, and overall metabolic health. Changes in γ-Glu-Met concentrations may be associated with specific disease conditions, such as liver disorders, oxidative damage, and certain types of cancers, thus making it useful for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. γ-Glu-Met can be further metabolized in the body, involving key metabolic pathways such as the gamma-glutamyl cycle, which is essential for maintaining cellular glutathione levels and supporting antioxidant defenses. Analysis of γ-Glu-Met and its metabolites can reveal insights into the functions of glutathione metabolism, redox balance, and methionine utilization in various cellular processes, including detoxification, methylation, and protein synthesis.
