Gangliosides are complex molecules consisting of glycosphingolipids, which include ceramide and oligosaccharides, attached to one or more sialic acids such as N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA). These molecules are found in the plasma membrane, particularly concentrated in the nervous system, where they play crucial roles in modulating cell signal transduction. Recent studies have highlighted the significant immunological functions of gangliosides, suggesting that both natural and semi-synthetic gangliosides may serve as potential treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. On the cell surface, gangliosides contribute to cell recognition and communication, with their oligosaccharide moieties acting as specific markers that influence tissue growth and differentiation, as well as being implicated in cancer development. Additionally, gangliosides serve as receptors for certain hormones and bacterial toxins, such as cholera toxin, facilitating the recognition of extracellular molecules.
Services at MtoZ Biolabs
Our Ganglio Series of Glycosphingolipid Analysis Service utilizes a highly sensitive and precise mass spectrometry-based platform. In this process, the glycosphingolipids are first extracted from the samples. The extracted GSLs are then subject to liquid chromatography separation and further analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The data obtained from the mass spectrometry is processed and analyzed to provide detailed information about the molecular structure and quantity of the GSLs in the samples.
