Glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) is derived from glucose, one of the most fundamental molecules in cellular metabolism. It is an essential metabolic intermediate, playing pivotal roles in several metabolic pathways including glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, the pentose phosphate pathway, and glycogen synthesis. G6P is also involved in the insulin-mediated glucose transport pathway that maintains glucose homeostasis in the body. Its structure consists of a six-carbon glucose moiety phosphorylated at the 6 position, making it unable to freely diffuse out of the cell, effectively trapping glucose within the cell for metabolic processing. Given its pivotal role in multiple metabolic pathways, disruption of G6P metabolism can lead to various diseases, including glycogen storage diseases, diabetes, and cancer. Understanding G6P concentration and metabolism is thus fundamental in studying disease mechanisms and drug discovery.
