Inosine is a naturally occurring nucleoside that plays a significant role in various biological processes, particularly in the purine metabolism pathway. Structurally, inosine consists of a hypoxanthine base attached to a ribose (ribofuranose) sugar via a β-N9-glycosidic bond. While inosine is not a component of DNA or RNA under normal conditions, it is an important intermediate in the degradation and salvage pathways of purine nucleotides. Inosine can also be converted into adenosine and guanosine nucleotides, making it a critical player in maintaining the balance of purine nucleotides within the cell.
Inosine is involved in several physiological processes, including energy metabolism, immune response modulation, and neuroprotection. Its role in the salvage pathway helps recycle purines, thereby conserving energy and resources within the cell. Inosine is also studied for its potential therapeutic applications, particularly in neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and as an immunomodulatory agent.
