Leu-Val is a dipeptide composed of two amino acids: leucine (Leu) and valine (Val). Both leucine and valine are branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) that play essential roles in protein synthesis and metabolic regulation. In the Leu-Val dipeptide, leucine is linked to valine through a peptide bond formed between the carboxyl group of leucine and the amino group of valine.
The content of Leu-Val can serve as a potential biomarker for specific physiological and pathological states. In clinical and sports science, detecting the levels of Leu-Val can help assess protein metabolic status, nutritional status, muscle injury recovery, and insulin resistance. Changes in Leu-Val concentrations may be associated with certain disease conditions, such as muscle atrophy, chronic diseases, and liver diseases, making it useful for pathological diagnosis and monitoring treatment efficacy. Leu-Val can be further metabolized in the body into leucine and valine, both of which are involved in several key metabolic pathways, such as the oxidation of branched-chain amino acids, energy production, and the regulation of metabolic homeostasis. Analysis of Leu-Val metabolites can reveal the specific functions and mechanisms of branched-chain amino acids in cellular energy metabolism, signal transduction, and protein synthesis.
