Murideoxycholic acid (MDCA) is a secondary bile acid produced primarily in the intestines through the microbial metabolism of primary bile acids secreted by the liver. Structurally, MDCA is a 3α-hydroxy steroid with additional hydroxy groups at the 3 and 6 positions on the cholan-24-oic acid backbone. It acts as a metabolite in both mice and humans and is closely related to cholic acid, being one of its derivatives. MDCA plays a crucial role in the bile acid cycle, regulating the absorption and excretion of bile acids.
Research indicates that MDCA is vital not only in normal bile acid metabolism but also in the progression of various diseases, including liver and metabolic disorders. In certain pathological conditions, fluctuations in MDCA levels may serve as critical biomarkers for disease progression and therapeutic response.
