    Ricin Analysis Service

      Ricin is a highly toxic, naturally occurring protein derived from the castor oil plant, Ricinus communis. It is a ribosome-inactivating protein that inhibits protein synthesis leading to cell death. Due to its high toxicity, ricin is often used as a biological weapon. Accurate identification and quantitation of ricin is crucial for forensic, environmental, and food safety applications.

      Technical Principles

      At MtoZ Biolabs, we use a combination of high-resolution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and metabolomics techniques for ricin analysis. LC-MS/MS is a powerful analytical tool that separates compounds based on their mass-to-charge ratio, providing highly accurate and sensitive detection of ricin.

       

      By coupling LC-MS/MS with metabolomics, we can profile entire metabolic networks affected by ricin, gaining a holistic view of its impact on biological systems. This not only allows us to detect and quantify ricin, but also to understand the downstream effects of its toxicity.

      Sample Submission Requirements

      • Type of samples: Animal tissue, plasma, serum, plant materials, cell, etc.
      • Quantity: At least 200 μl liquid, 1 x 10⁷ cells, or 200 mg tissue.
      • Storage and Shipping: Samples should be stored at -80℃ and shipped with dry ice.
      • Avoid repeated cycles of freezing and thawing
      • More than 6 biological replicates should be prepared.
