Tryptophan (Trp) is an essential aromatic amino acid that plays a key role in synthesizing proteins and bioactive molecules, such as serotonin, melatonin, and niacin. It is vital for various physiological processes, including mood regulation, immune response, and sleep. The gut microbiome significantly influences human health, particularly through its role in modulating tryptophan metabolism. It regulates three primary metabolic pathways of tryptophan: the serotonin pathway, the kynurenine pathway, and the indole derivatives pathway. Disruption in these pathways is closely associated with several health conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, metabolic syndrome (such as diabetes, obesity, NAFLD, and insulin resistance), cardiovascular diseases, and neuropsychiatric disorders like anxiety, depression, and autism.
